Stockholm reads best on foot and by ferry. Gamla Stan, the royal palace, the harbour and Djurgården’s museums sit close together, and a guided few hours joins them without a parking hunt. The Vasa and a hop into the inner archipelago are the two add-ons most first visits should make room for.
A hire car is the wrong tool for those two nights. Collect at Arlanda when the plan leaves town — islands beyond the day cruise, Uppsala, or the road west. Sleep in the city, not at the airport, unless the flight is absurdly early or late.
Norrmalm or Östermalm near the harbour for first nights, Gamla Stan if you want the old town under your feet, Södermalm for restaurants. Skip an Arlanda hotel unless the flight is very early or late — the day trips and the boats leave from the city. Compare Stockholm hotels →
Not for Gamla Stan, Djurgården and a harbour cruise. SL and the boats cover the centre. Hire from Arlanda (ARN) when you leave town: outer-archipelago islands a day cruise does not reach, Uppsala, or the drive toward the west coast. Compare Arlanda car hire →
A walk through Gamla Stan, then either the Vasa or a boat. The archipelago cruise is the add-on that uses the water the city is built on. Save the car decision for the morning you actually leave town. Book an archipelago cruise →
